how the Taekwon-do kids development program works

TKD Program Overview

The Taekwon-Do Kids Development Program (TKD Program) is a structured teaching system for children aged 3 to 7, designed to develop Taekwon-Do skills alongside essential life skills and character education. Rooted in martial arts principles and child development theory, the program blends physical training with imaginative play, values-based learning, and guided parent involvement to support a child’s overall growth—physically, emotionally, socially, and mentally.

Structured Curriculum for Kids

Each lesson in the TKD Program lasts between 30 minutes to 1 hour, offering a structured yet playful experience for young learners. Classes include:

  • Taekwon-Do practice drills

  • Movement-based games and activities

  • Role-playing and storytelling

  • Life skills discussions

  • Group interaction exercises

To reinforce learning, students also complete homework from a custom Study Book, designed to involve parents in the educational process.

Parental involvement is key

The program encourages parents to actively support their children by:

  • Reading the Study Book with them at home

  • Assisting in practice and homework

  • Reinforcing the core values of Taekwon-Do

This collaboration enhances understanding and ensures children stay connected to the program beyond the classroom.

Reward System

The reward system in the Taekwon-Do Kids Program motivates children of all ability levels and promotes consistent progress through positive reinforcement.

Grade Award

There are 6 grade levels in the TKD Program. Students begin as Level 1 white belts and progress through structured assessments in:

  • Coordination Skills
  • Taekwon-Do Skills
  • Taekwon-Do Knowledge

Assessments are conducted by certified TKD Program examiners. After completing all 6 grades, students graduate from the program and move into the junior Taekwon-Do class as an 8th Kup (Yellow Belt).

Special Awareness Badges
The TKD Program also includes a supplementary syllabus on safety and awareness. Children can earn 3 unique badges by completing class and homework assignments:

  • Danger Awareness

  • Stranger Awareness

  • Bullying Awareness

Each badge helps children understand and respond to potentially harmful situations with confidence.

Effort & Reward

The student’s effort and progress is monitored by the instructor. When a student:

  • Shows significant improvement in effort or progress
  • Shows consistent effort or progress over a period of time

The instructor may communicate praise or verbal acknowledgement. Some instructors may opt to issue a ‘good effort’ sticker or a ‘good process’ sticker in addition to the verbal feedback.

Grading System

Every student should be given a Student Assignment Sheet for their grade level. The Student Assignment Sheet serves as a checklist for the student to know which assignments they need to do for that level. Once the student has completed all the assignment tasks for their level, they will be ready to take the grading exam.

If the student is successful in passing the grading exam, the student will be promoted to the next level and will receive a new stripe on their white belt. When they complete the TKD Program they will receive a graduation certificate and be ready to enter the mainstream junior class as an 8th Kup/Yellow Belt.
